Apple Inc came clean on July 2, 2010 about an embarrassing software glitch that overstates network signal strength in its hot-selling iPhone, as complaints mounted about the phone's wraparound antenna. Apple admitted its signal strength miscalculation dates back to its original 2007 iPhone. It promised to fix the glitch in a few weeks, but did not directly address concerns that its antenna design causes reception problems for iPhone 4, its newest phone. The “Bumper” can solve iPhone 4 problems, as reported by Consumer Reports magazine on Monday. Apple sells these casings that encloses the iPhone 4 to supposedly protect the phone from falls and scratches. This finding may urge Apple to give away a “Bumper” for free after the publication confirmed on July 14 that it had been in contact with Apple regarding the testing of the product.

“Bumper” is sold by Apple for $29 and they are small rubber skirts that fits the smartphone snugly. “With the Bumper fitted, we repeated the test procedure, placing a finger on the Bumper at the point at which it covers the gap [on the lower left side of the case],” said Paul Reynolds, Consumer Reports’s electronics editor, on Wednesday afternoon on the magazine’s blog.

Apple had initially acknowledged the weakening signal problem complaints by its consumers and promised to update the software. Consumer Reports was the first confirmation of a case remedy from an independent, commercial-quality testing facility.
