Facebook, the largest social network was launched in 2004, now boasting over 750 millions members, has updated its apps. FB teams up with Skype, to offer free video calls. This is a step up, but will it do well against Google+ ?

Microsoft, along time Facebook partner, is acquiring Skype in a $8.5 Billion deal expected to close before the year ends. Video chat may help FB repel competition from Google which introduced their own version of a social network last week that featured video chat.

Ben Schachter, an analyst at Macquarie Capital says: “You’re going to have more and more competition between Facebook and Google. The two companies are going to be battling it out for some time to come.”

But again, how important is video chatting?

Philip Su writes on Facebook blog: “Video chat has been around for years now, but its still not an everyday activity for most people. Sometimes its too difficult to set up, or the friends you want to talk to are on different services.”
