A tragedy has struck Major League Baseball during a Texas Ranger match. A man who was with his boy died after falling out of the left-field stands and about 20 feet to ground last night.

Shannon Stone, a lieutenant in that town’s fire department and a fireman for 18 years, went after a ball sent to the stands by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton. Tragically, the man lost his balance, went over the railing and fell head-first in a space between the 14-foot outfield rail and the grandstand near the Oakland Athletics bullpen.

“We had a tragic accident tonight and one of our fans lost their life reaching over the rail trying to get a ball,” team president Nolan Ryan said. “As an organization, and as our team members and our staff, we’re very heavy hearted about this, and our thoughts and prayers go out to family.”

The horrifying T.V. replays showed Stone setting up to catch Hamilton’s throw, then tumbles over the fence as his boy watches. A man close to Stone tried to hold onto him but couldn’t.

Athletics reliever, Brad Ziegler broke into tears when he learned Stone had died.

“They had him on a stretcher. ‘Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself’, Ziegler recounts. The people who were carrying him out assured him, ‘Sir, we’ll get your son. We’ll make sure he’s OK.’”He had his arms swinging. He talked and was conscious. We assumed he was okay. But when you find out he’s not, its just tough.”

This marks the second fatal fall at major league ballpark this season.
