Bad news for tennis fans who were looking forward to seeing Serena Williams at the US Open. She’s not joining.
Serena, the world’s top female player this year, just announced that she won’t be playing in the tournament. The reason-she’s still recovering from the surgery on her right foot.
“It is with much frustration and deep sadness that I am having to pull out of the U.S. Open,” Serena said in a statement released Friday by her publicist.
Serena’s injury was caused by a broken glass at a restaurant when she was in Munich. It happened shortly after she won her 4th Wimbledon singles. She just had surgery last July.
So this also means the Williams sisters won’t be able to play double to defend their doubles title they won last year. But Venus is expected to play this year.
The US Open is set to open on August 30 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
