Sore eye and sore loser is how I’ll describe Antonio Margarito after taking a serious beating from WBA light middleweight champ Miguel Cotto. The taller Mexican never had a chance against the smaller Puerto Rican in this grudge match. Like his moniker “El Tornado”, nowadays, Margarito is more like a loud windbag with more talk and slow action.

“His mom came up to me and asked if he hits like a girl and I said ‘yeah, the punches didn’t hurt me.’ The swelling got worse and worse and that’s the reason. There was a little bit of favoritism because my eye was worse when I fought Pacquiao. The doctor asked me three times about how many fingers I was holding. I answered correctly three times. I asked the doctor for one more round but he didn’t want to give it to me. I felt this was like the continuation of the first fight. I think the last couple of rounds would have been mine. I was started to connect. He was holding and I was starting to land a lot of punches. All I asked for was one more round. I promised that if I would’ve gotten one more round, I would have gave it all,” Margarito claimed.

Sweet revenge it was for the 31-year old champ who tasted his first defeat from his challenger in round 11 of July 2008, he lost his WBA welterweight belt. It was a controversial win for Margarito when a year after their fight, an investigation revealed that the red stains on the hand wraps Margarito used were similar to the stains on the inserts seized before the Mosley match. This drew suspicions that Margarito may have cheated again with his “hardened” handwraps.

Margarito was unhappy with the stoppage at the tenth round. His right eye was swollen shut from Cotto’s dead on accuracy, as if his gloves had laser light pointing to the area where Manny Pacquiao had seriously injured a year earlier. Contradictory to Margarito’s pride, referee Steve Smogger may just have saved Margarito from further damage.
