The Filipinos rejoices along with Philippine Azkals who advances to the second round of the AFC 2014 after defeating Sri Lanka Lions 4-to-nothing at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, Philippines.

The field was drenched with rain on a humid afternoon with nearly 13,000 Filipino fans cheering for the “dogs”. The dogs didn’t have to score a single goal, they only needed to keep the “cats” scoreless to advance to the second round.

But the PH team knows better than to just play sluggishly, knowing that this time they had to start strong in contrast to their previous game, punched in two goals in the first half. Thanks to left winger Chieffy Caligdong, his kick sent the ball to the goal post that ricocheted inside the Lion’s net for goal number 1. Then nearing the midway of the first half, Phil Younghusband’s hustle paid well when he slid a ground ball for the second score.

On the second half, Midfielder/Forward Angel Aldeguer Guirado added a third point which gave the Sri Lankan team a hint of hopelessness. Finally, Phil scored his second kill with a penalty kick that sealed their match with Kuwait.

Bad news for team Philippines though, Stephan Schrock, the 24-year old who has proven his worth will be sidelined along with Aly Borromeo for the first leg game with Kuwait. Both players received a yellow card.
