At 2:15 in afternoon today in the Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, a 17-year old shot himself after the phoning into the school’s switchboard and alerting school personnel of his intention to hurt himself.

Emergency personnel were immediately notified, and the school’s safety responder rushed to the campus area where the student had called. School president Stephen J. Helmich ordered staff and students to remain where they were so that emergency personnel could come unhindered to the wounded student’s aide.

The reason for the shooting remains unknown. A classmate of his were surprised with the self-infliction.

“He’s a really good guy. He’s a happy guy around school,” said junior Vincent Halloran. “It was a complete surprise,” he added.

Halloran shared that the shooter played sports and took part in the same academic program for top students. “He’s funny, always happy and smiling,” Halloran described.

The student is currently in stable condition at the Wishard Memorial Hospital.
