As the Indianapolis 500 wound down on Sunday, team owner Dennis Reinbold knew some cars would be slowing to save fuel but he wasn’t able to warn driver Mike Conway in time.

After Conway’s car went airborne in a spectacular crash, a shaken Reinbold said, “I was just getting ready to tell Mike, ‘Some guys are going to slow down, so give yourself some room.’ I never got the words out.”

England’s Conway, 26, ran into a slowing Ryan Hunter-Reay while charging toward the finish on the penultimate lap of the 200-lap race on the 2.5 mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Conway’s car careened into the catch fencing, causing the race won by Scotland’s Dario Franchitti to finish under caution.

Danica Patrick, who finished sixth, said, “It’s not comforting going underneath a car flipping in the air. I got through it, but I hope they’re OK. It’s never good when people are upside down and doing cartwheels.”
