Do you remember opening your own Happy Meal box? Excited to play with the toy inside more than eating your burger and greasy fries?

Well, non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest thinks of McDonald’s as the “stranger in the playground handing out candy to children.” They accuse McDonald’s of using irresponsible advertising by promoting their fastfood directly to children, and thus adding much to the cause of obesity in the US.

CSPI litigation director, Mr. Stephen Gardner, says “McDonald’s use of toys undercuts parental authority and exploits young children’s developmental immaturity—all this to induce children to prefer foods that may harm their health. It’s a creepy and predatory practice that warrants an injunction.”

The Center for Disease Control said that in the last 30 years, causes of children’s obesity tripled. And these children are prone to more diseases such as bone and joint problems, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnea, among others.

But do you think McDonald’s is the one to blame?

“CSPI’s twisted characterization of McDonald’s as ‘the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children’ is an insult to every one of our franchisees and employees around the world.” the fastfood chain’s CEO, James Skinner, said. “I want you to know we will vigorously defend our brand, our reputation, our food, and our people. CSPI is wrong in its assertions and frivolous in its legal threats.”

“Getting a toy is just one part of a fun, family experience at McDonald’s.” William Whitman, VP for Communications, said.
