In Wilsonville Oregon at around 3:15 in the afternoon Tuesday, two small planes collided near the State park. While one aircraft survived the accident, the other crashed to the ground and exploded on impact, scattering debris over a wide area, authorities said. The impact was so strong a resident thought it was a huge earthquake. The accident claimed two lives and critically wounding a third.

The surviving aircraft managed to land Champoeg State Park, two people escaped with their lives. The more unfortunate plane went down into a nearby wooded area where police had to use a chopper to reach the crash site.

The location of the crash indicated that the planes weren’t on commercial or private charter flight pattern, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus said.

County Sheriff Jack Crabtree told the Oregonian that the plane broke up in mid-air and that part of the fuselage landed south of the Willametter River and another part landed north of the river.
