The Paralympics is getting bigger. The days when it was an off-year adjunct to the Olympics is over. Nowadays it’s a fully-fledged partner and will even be staged in the same host city of Vancouver.

International Paralympic Committee president Sir Philip Craven said the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee have planned the two events to be one great festival of sport.

“They’ve gone out right from the start with the intention for it to be one organizing committee and two connected Games in a great festival of sport, and I think it is fantastic,” Craven says.

The Paralympics is also getting huge support from sponsors. Visa, tech company Atos Origin and Otto Bock, a German health-care company are global sponsors of the International Paralympic Committee. Last week, Korean electronics giant Samsung signed up as a worldwide partner as well as an official sponsor.

“The Paralympic Games is part of the Olympic movement. It’s inseparable,” says Samsung vice-president Gyehyun Kwon, the company’s head of worldwide sports marketing.
